Ohio hospitals' HIT push focuses on automating patient care
Posted on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 - 08:54 amFisher-Titus Medical Center, a community hospital serving North Central Ohio, and Port Clinton, Ohio-based Magruder Hospital aim to become the standard in automated patient care. Over the next 10 months, these healthcare organizations may become the first two all-digital, smart hospitals in the nation when they complete the implementation of Cerner healthcare technology systems throughout both organizations.
Cerner, Fisher-Titus and Magruder define a smart hospital as a fully-automated hospital that incorporates the patient experience into the provider’s workflow and proactively pushes relevant information to and from the electronic health record to the patient and provider. If all goes according to plan, this project should launch both organizations to the top five percent of automated hospitals in the nation and create the infrastructure that could eventually build a connected health network.
The technology being deployed includes more than 35 Cerner Millennium solutions and calls for each hospital to transform patient rooms into private Cerner Smart Rooms, which are designed to incorporate key elements of the patient and clinician experience to automate workflows and processes, and to coordinate care among providers.
As independent community hospitals, Fisher-Titus and Magruder have for the past 11 years partnered to implement technology that enhances the patient care experience. The organizations made the decision to collaborate on the automation of their hospitals to develop best practices for technology deployment and to begin to coordinate care in the region.
In addition to the Cerner Smart Rooms, Fisher-Titus and Magruder are automating each department within their hospitals, including surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, emergency department and the ICU. These implementations should be completed this spring.
